International Dietetics and Nutrition Terminology
The Nutrition Care Process (NCP) is a standardised model intended to guide dietitians in providing high quality nutrition care. International Dietetics and Nutrition terminology (IDNT) is the standardised language used to support the nutrition care process. Both the process and terminology were developed in the US where the American Dietetic Association has led implementation.
The DAA Board is keen to support members in implementing the NCP and IDNT in practice in Australia.
Health Information Terminology and e-Health
National E-Health Transition Authority (NEHTA) was established by the Australian, State and Territory governments to develop better ways of electronically collecting and securely exchanging health information.
The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO) is an international not-for-profit organization based in Denmark. IHTSDO acquires, owns and administers the rights to Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine-Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT) and other health terminologies and related standards. SNOMED CT is a clinical healthcare terminology that can cross-map to other international standards and is used in more than 50 countries.
National Centre for Classification in Health (NCCH) and ICD-10
ICD-10-AM is the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision, Australian Modification. It consists of a tabular list of diseases and accompanying index. The NCCH is responsible for producing and updating ICD-10-AM in Australia under contract from The Australian Department of Health and Ageing, holder of the WHO licence to create an Australian version of ICD-10.
DAA IDNT Working Group
DAA has established a member working group to advise on IDNT activities. The objectives are:
- To collaborate with international organisations on activities related to the development of IDNT
- To understand development in national coding systems (ICD, SNOMED) in order to advocate for uptake of IDNT and NCP as part of national classifications
- To understand developments in national e-health in order to advocate for IDNT as part of national data sets
- To promote uptake of IDNT by software developers
- To promote uptake of IDNT at national level in specific agencies (e.g. Medicare, DVA) to support reporting functions and accountability and advocate for IDNT as part of national data sets
- To promote uptake of IDNT at State/Territory level into systems to support reporting functions and accountability
- To promote uptake of IDNT at organisational/network level in public and private health care settings across spectrum of practice (e.g. hospital, community health, rural & remote, private practice)
- To promote teaching of IDNT in DAA accredited training schools
- To ensure IDNT is covered in entry-level competencies
- To inform DAA members in order to promote IDNT use to record pertinent data in electronic health record and clinical information management systems
