Food industry sponsorship of sport
DAA has long been calling for more responsible marketing by the food and beverage industries. Having sports clubs and sporting events sponsored by fast food companies sends the wrong message to Australians, particularly children. But there is nowhere near enough Government funding to get people active, and many sporting groups rely on the support of such companies to survive.
DAA would like to see sponsorship of sport by the food and beverage industries used to promote positive messages about healthy eating, so that it’s easier for Australians to choose healthier options. And the Association would like to see healthier choices available at sports clubs and sporting events. DAA calls on food and beverage companies to continue to look for ways to improve the nutritional quality of the products sold at such events, and to serve appropriate portions.
And the Association would like to see tighter Government regulation of food and beverage marketing to Australians in all areas of marketing, not just sports sponsorship. The issues of poor nutrition and inactivity are so much bigger than just sponsorship of sporting activities. And we will only get results by comprehensive action addressing all of these issues in the community.
