Regulating the diet industry

The Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) is calling on the Government to better regulate the multi-million dollar weight loss industry.  Australians need better access to Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs) ? and to be protected from potentially harmful, unproven weight loss programs.

DAA supports tightening up of the Weight Management Industry Code of Practice, and believes all weight loss programs should be thoroughly assessed by experts to make sure they are safe and effective in the long term.

DAA encourages Australians to avoid ‘diets’ and instead adopt a healthy lifestyle that can be sustained over the long-term. APDs are qualified to provide advice and support to people wanting to achieve or maintain a healthy weight, and adopt healthy eating habits for the long-term.

DAA has made addressing overweight and obesity a top priority, launching an obesity strategy in 2006, which calls for a comprehensive, coordinated and evidence-based approach to managing this issue.
