National Texture Modification Standards


Roadshows on the Australian Standards for Texture Modified Foods and Fluids.

The Brisbane Roadshow held on 20 August 2007 has been made into a WebpresentThis project is a joint initiative of the Dietitians Association of Australia and Speech Pathology Australia, proudly sponsored by Novartis Medical Nutrition.

Thickened fluids and texture-modified foods are provided for the management of swallowing difficulties (dysphagia). Previously a large number of different labels were applied to food textures and fluid thickness levels across Australia. The consequences of inconsistent terminology can affect patient safety and reduces the efficiency of communication.
 
The Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) and The Speech Pathology Association of Australia Limited (Speech Pathology Australia, SPA) joined together to develop agreed standards for a number of levels, labels for these levels and definitions of thickened fluids and texture-modified foods within the Australian context.
 
A scale for modified fluids and a scale for texture-modified foods was developed and consensus was achieved between DAA and SPA. The standards are now recommended for use throughout Australia and are available to download:
