Membership categories and eligibility


DAA Membership categories:


I - Full membership: - full member (various categories)
                                  - student dietitian member

II - Associate membership:
                                - Associate full or student, and Associate Overseas categories.

I - Full Membership


- FULL MEMBER: a dietitian who meets the eligibility requirements of DAA.

To be eligible for full membership of DAA, one of the following is required:

  • an approved Bachelor of Science Degree (or equivalent qualification) plus a postgraduate degree in nutrition and dietetics from a DAA accredited institution;
  • an approved undergraduate degree in nutrition and dietetics from a DAA accredited institution; or
  • successful completion of the dietetics examination for overseas trained dietitians administered by the Dietitians Association of Australia.

- STUDENT DIETITIAN MEMBER: a student enrolled in a DAA accredited nutrition and dietetic course.

II - Associate Membership


 


A- ASSOCIATE MEMBER: the Associate member program has two separate categories:

  • ASSOCIATE FULL

Associate membership is open to persons without dietetic qualifications who meet the eligibility requirements of DAA. Student membership is available in this category.

Associate membership is available to persons with:

1.

A qualification of at least three years from an Australian university with:

  • human nutrition science content of equivalent length and depth to that for a full DAA member (this would usually include subjects such as biochemistry and physiology); and progression in content shown by:
  • studies in nutrition or food and nutrition each year; or
  • entrance to post graduate program dependent on a particular course of study; or
  • studies in human nutrition or food and nutrition in later years of program dependent on particular content in years 1 and 2; or
  • at least one major in human nutrition or food and nutrition can be demonstrated (a major is usually 50% credit weight of year 2 and year 3 of a 3 year program).

OR

2.

A degree from an Australian university, with more than 2/3 research in terms of time or credit weight and thesis topic that is demonstrably human nutrition or food and nutrition.

OR

3. A degree (e.g. Food Technology, Medicine, Psychology) from an Australian or overseas university and a contribution to human nutrition (or food and nutrition) in Australia demonstrated by:
  • Author of at least 3 articles published within the last 5 years on human nutrition (or food and nutrition) topics in peer reviewed journals; or
  • Presented 6 oral or poster presentations in last 5 years on food and human nutrition topics at recognised symposia including at least 2 within Australia; or
  • Presents a portfolio to demonstrate a contribution to food and human nutrition in Australia. (This may relate to any facet but could include education, policy, advocacy, journalism etc).

  • ASSOCIATE STUDENT 

Associate membership is available for those meeting criterion 1 or 2 above.

-Would I be eligible for Associate Membership?
DAA has developed a rigorous assessment system to ensure that associate members of DAA are appropriately qualifies nutrition professionals. Associate members have been accepted from a variety of nutrition programs across Australia. Also see FAQ.

-How to Apply for Associate Membership?
Applications for Associate Membership are accepted throughout the year, both Online and hard copy. As associate applications have to be assessed against the associate member criteria, an offer to join DAA as an Associate member is not automatic. All associate membership applications are assessed by the DAA Membership and Reinstatement Advisory Committee (which meets every 6 weeks) before being forwarded to the Executive Director for approval. Applicants will be informed of the outcome by letter.


B- ASSOCIATE (OVERSEAS) Member

Associate Membership (Overseas) is a membership category for dietitians living outside Australia who are:
- current full members of an overseas national dietetic association which is recognised by the International Confederation of Dietetic Associations
- and not eligible for full DAA membership.

This category has been specifically established to encourage international communications on nutrition and dietetics issues and enhance the "dietetic community" around the world. All applications for Associate Membership (Overseas) must be authorised by the overseas dietetic association to verify current membership status of the applicant.

How to apply for Associate Membership (Overseas)

Applications for Associate Membership (Overseas) are accepted throughout the year, both Online and Hard copy. Evidence of current full membership of an overseas national dietetic association which is recognised by the  International Confederation of Dietetic Associations.  Applications with the appropriate evidence are then forwarded to the Executive Director for approval.

Associate membership of DAA provides access to a range of services including:

  • The monthly DAA newsletter, regular mailings of information and a weekly email highlighting current issues and activities
  • Subscription to Nutrition & Dietetics
  • Access to extensive resources and information through the members' only section of the DAA website
  • Access at member prices to a range of CPD opportunities throughout the year including the national conference, workshops and seminars and information on international, national and local food and health related activities
  • Opportunities to network with other nutrition professionals including the option to join branch level or national interest groups on a range of nutrition issues
  • Services from a well organised, structured and progressive Association
 

Please note:
It is important to be aware that Associate members of DAA are not eligible for the Accredited Practising Dietitian program or professional insurance packages that are available to full DAA members. Associate members are also not able to join the DAA Board, Branch Executive and some DAA advisory committees.
