Liver Problems
Nutritional needs for those with liver problems vary greatly, depending on the degree of liver damage and the presence or absence of other complications.
The liver is an extremely important organ, involved in the metabolism of many nutrients, drugs and waste products. The liver has the ability to regenerate after damage, however there comes a point at which the level of damage is beyond repair.
Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver and may be caused by a virus or more serious damage to the liver. Dietary needs are dependent on the degree of liver damage and the presence or absence of other complications. Nutrients that may need to be considered in hepatitis include:
- protein
- fat
- carbohydrate
- sodium (salt)
- alcohol
It may also be necessary to vary the amount of fluid taken each day.
Individual requirements for these nutrients will vary greatly so it is important that expert dietary advice be sought from an
Accredited Practising Dietitian
who can consider all the influencing factors in conjuction with medical advice and make appropriate recommendations.
